| First find a suitable picture to put a border around. I chose this one from the Picture Publisher CD. | |
| Next, create a rectangular mask about 20 pixels in from each edge of the image. Invert the mask, then switch to the alpha channel. You should have something similar to this picture. | |
| Now apply the Crystallize filter. You may want to increase the crystal size to nearer 30 to get decent results. Experiment with the Preview until you get the border right. | |
| Next, apply a Gaussian blur, to get the picture on the lower left. | |
| Finally, let's apply our border to the picture. Switch away from the alpha channel, back to the main picture. Now select the tint fill tool, with a colour of black, and fill the image. You should have a border like this. Possibly one of the easiest effects you'll see, but still looks good. |
Border using Twirl filter: Border using Disturb filter: |
As a final note, remember that there are other filters that you can use. In the picture on the top left, I used the Twirl filter instead of Crystallize; in the bottom-left picture, I used the Disturb filter. Each one gives a new border that you can use. Other filters should work too, so why not give them a try. |
